REP-SF Citywide People’s Plan Zines: People-Centered Planning & Affordable Housing First!

We are so excited to launch our two new zines (mini magazines) illustrating the Race & Equity in all Planning Coalition’s Citywide People’s Plan, our visionary roadmap to housing justice in San Francisco. These zines showcase key parts of the Citywide People’s Plan so that we can inspire our members and the public about our work on people-centered planning and affordable housing. The “Affordable Housing FIRST” zine focuses on this shared value and the “Public Lands in Community Hands” zine focuses on one of our key collective solutions of claiming spaces within San Francisco for our communities.

The production of these zines is a testament to the power and possibilities of cultural organizing rooted in the Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities most impacted by (re)development and gentrification in San Francisco. The zines illustrate the lived experiences and expertise of our community members. They will serve as popular education tools as we build power through our organizing for housing justice and equitable city planning.

Guided and initiated by the REP-SF Coalition, these two zines are made possible thanks to a nine-month collaboration between REP-SF facilitators People Power Media and artists Jason Wyman / Queerly Complex, Sen Mendez, and christen alqueza. The two zines are available in English, Spanish, Filipino, and Chinese so that they are accessible to communities across the city.

Please help us spread the word by sharing our social media posts: “Affordable Housing FIRST” Zine (Instagram, Facebook, & Twitter) and “Public Lands in Community Hands” Zine (Instagram, Facebook, & Twitter)!

About the Zines

“Affordable Housing FIRST,” illustrated by Sen Mendez focuses on one of REP-SF’s core values of prioritizing stable, affordable housing. This zine tells the story of community members who have been here – born and raised in San Francisco, who are still here – despite displacement pressures, and who are fighting to stay in the City. It features perspectives from REP-SF members and youth leaders from Youth Making a Change (YMAC) at Coleman Advocates. Scroll through to view the full zine, and download it below!

“Public Lands in Community Hands,” illustrated by christen alqueza, focuses on the inspiring organizing effort and people-powered planning to build new affordable housing and community services in San Francisco! This solutions-focused zine tells the story of how REP-SF member Communities United for Health & Justice (CUHJ) led the grassroots organizing effort to claim space for the District 11 community to win the land, funding, and political will to build 131 units of affordable family housing, along with commercial space for community services at the Kapuso at the Upper Yard development.
